Reflecting the colours of a deep blue ocean with a hint of indigo, Tanzanite is fast becoming one of this year’s hottest jewellery trends. Its vibrant colour, paired with its rarity is making this stunning gem a must have for both jewellery lovers and savvy investors alike
What makes this stone particularly special is its rarity and location of origin. Tanzanite is 1000 times rarer than diamonds and can only be found in one location; beneath the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Considered as beautiful, if not more so, than diamonds, the stone is so rare it’s predicted that the supply of Tanzanite will run out in the next 25 years, earning this stone the moniker of the “generation gemstone”.
The stone is a relatively new find, first discovered in 1967 by a Portuguese prospector. Tanzanite is a variety of the Zoisite mineral and ranges in colour from deep blue to rich violet and indigo. Larger stones tend to display deeper, richer tones, whilst small stones tend towards lighter, lavender shades. These gemstones, similar to aquamarine, display few, if any, inclusions making its colour, sparkle and brilliance that much more striking.
Cut in all manner of shapes and sizes, Tanzanite is one of those stones that will look good in any form, however when set in a white metal the colour truly gets a chance to shine.
Similar in hardness to an Emerald but softer than a diamond, Tanzanite is the kind of stone that requires a bit of care. We suggest steering away from ultrasonic baths, acids or steam to clean it and use warm soapy water instead.
If you are worried about what to wear with such richly coloured gemstones - then don’t. Tanzanite’s blue-indigo tones go with just about anything and are sure to elicit compliments from all who see this spectacular gem.
