The 4 C’s of Diamond Rings
Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to the proportions, symmetry and polish of a diamond which all directly affect its appearance and the way that it interacts with light. A well-cut diamond will reflect light in a way that will maximise its brilliance and fire, making it more dazzling and valuable. The cut is generally graded on a scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor which is determined from various factors like the angles and proportions of the facets. Cut plays a massive role in how your ring will look.
Clarity
The clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions and blemishes in the stone which are natural imperfections that are made at the diamond's formation. These imperfections directly affect its visual appearance and the overall value of the stone.
Diamond clarity is graded on a scale ranging from “flawless” (no inclusions or blemishes under 10x magnification) to “included” (inclusions and blemishes visible to the naked eye). There are many grades in between this scale such as “very slightly included” (VS1 and VS2) and “slightly included (SI1 and SI2) which is all based on the volume, size and visibility of the blemishes in the stone.
A diamond with a higher clarity is more desirable because of their rarity and beauty. With no visible flaws, more light can enter the stone and thus produce greater sparkle and brilliance.
Colour
The colour of the diamond plays a huge role in determining the value of a diamond. The most desirable stones are those that are colourless, as they are able to pass more light through them to create maximum sparkle and brilliance. The colour of a diamond is graded on a letter scale with the most valued stones (colourless) ranking D,E and F with the scale decreasing down to G and J which generally have a yellow or brown tint.
On the flip side, some diamonds ranked J, are considered fancy stones and actually boast a range of colours such as pinks, blue, green, red and purple. They can be quite valuable depending on their colour saturation and hue.
Carat
Carat is the grade scale that people are most familiar with when it comes to diamond properties. Carat refers to the unit of weight used to measure diamonds, and one carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams. Generally speaking, larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable than smaller diamonds of the same quality, however, two diamonds of the same weight can have different values if their other characteristics differ.
When shopping for your next diamond, it’s important to consider that carat weight is only one aspect of a diamond's overall beauty and value. You should consider the cut, clarity and colour as well as the carat to find the perfect piece for you!
Types of Diamond Rings
Solitaire Diamond Rings
Classic, timeless and gorgeous, a solitaire ring is a first choice for many people choosing a diamond ring. A solitaire ring features a single diamond that is set in a simple band, it is usually held in place by prongs that allow the stone to catch and reflect light, creating a brilliant sparkle. You can find solitaire diamond rings in a variety of styles including white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and platinum.
Cluster Diamond Rings
A cluster ring is usually a more affordable way to achieve amazing sparkle. A cluster ring features several small diamonds that are arranged closely together rather than one larger diamond as a centrepiece. The diamonds can be grouped in a variety of different shapes such as round cluster, square cluster or flower cluster. Eye-catching and beautiful, a cluster diamond ring is a great choice for an engagement or anniversary.
Coloured Diamond Rings
Did you know that you can also find coloured diamond rings? You can find in-fashion pink diamond rings, or chic black diamond rings to fall in love with! Pink diamonds are also known as australian diamonds and are very famous for their beautiful blush tones. You can also enjoy coloured jewellery in Graham’s gemstone jewellery range.
